Acupuncture Face Lift - Beauty Through Pins and Needles
Leah, a single, 45-year-old executive at a banking institution, admits to being queasy around needles just like the rest of us.
"But all that changed when I first had my first Botox injection. Since then, I have overcome my fear of the needle," she shares. Adding that the ultimate reward -- younger-looking skin-is, after all, is the best motivation.
What would she then say to acupuncture as another option to maintaining ageless skin?
This ancient Chinese health practice, which involves puncturing a patient's skin with hair-thin needles at particular locations, has been around for more than 2,000 years but had only made its way to Western consciousness in the early 70s.

Where before the practice was used to ease chronic pain, improve circulation and many other health benefits, alternative health practitioners and beauty therapists alike have found that acupuncture could be another option to defy aging and restoring beauty to the face. After all, according to Chinese lore, it was practiced as far back as the Sung Dynasty (960 AD-1279 AD) when concubines received treatments to keep them looking fresh and nubile for their emperors.
This latest beauty development was said to have started from the treatment of patients who suffered serious injuries to the face that had caused it to droop or atrophy.
Facial Rejuvenation Therapy
One such patient, a 57-year-old woman who fell into an empty pool and fractured her skull and had neck injuries, suffered from partial facial paralysis and raging headaches, until she underwent acupuncture sessions.
The treatment, called facial rejuvenation therapy involves placing needles at points where the body's vital energy - also known in Chinese as qi (pronounced chee) - is supposedly blocked. Stagnated points are detected by feeling for nodules under the skin. The placement of the needles is painless except in spots where there's lots of blockage. In those instances, the patient might feel the slightest of stings. Combined with light therapy and nutritional supplements, the unblocked surface absorbs the nutritional supplements (vitamin and mineral supplements), that accompany the regimen.
After ten acupuncture treatments, the woman had not only regained feeling to her once paralyzed facial muscles but noticed a remarkable change in her appearance. The skin had become smoother and glowing and the small lines on her face and the sun damage on her neck was gone.
The Food and Drug Administration regulates acupuncture needles and related devices, but has not approved them specifically for facial rejuvenation acupuncture.
Another technique using needles called collagen induction therapy, which involves running a sterile roller containing dozens of fine needles over the skin, is still under trial. The needles cause small wounds that force the body to produce collagen.
Facial rejuvenation acupuncture does go beyond giving clients a chance to simply feel better; because it also allows them to feel better about themselves.
It seems it would take years for facial rejuvenation acupuncture to reach our shores but if you do decide to get one it is best to remember that acupuncture, although relatively unsubstantiated scientifically, has produced an enormous number of favorable anecdotal experiences.
